A New Age of Discovery

We’re entering an entirely new age in pharmaceutical discovery. More compounds are under development today than ever before. Advances in molecular biology and genetic engineering have allowed researchers to understand the effect of disease at the cellular level. The potential impact on healthcare is very exciting.

These advances allow pharmaceutical companies to target specific compounds to affect particular disease states. But there’s a catch. The cost of bringing a drug to market represents millions of dollars - not to mention years of scientific and clinical effort. Diagnostic technology, capable of providing rapid results, is important in helping to identify appropriate patient populations, with the goal of achieving cost effective therapy and successful patient outcome.

PharmaNetics' diagnostic technology, known as the Thrombolytic Assessment System, or TAS, monitors the blood clotting process. The TAS is rapid, accurate and easy to use. This means it can aid physicians in maintaining desired dosages levels, pre-screening patients to determine those responsive to therapy, and monitoring changes in coagulation status in acute care settings.

Targeting Disease States

The TAS provides an important tool in the treatment of heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, sepsis and pulmonary embolism. These diseases ultimately are responsible for more that 70% of all deaths. Many drugs which affect coagulation dissipate quickly in the blood and must be monitored to maximized optimal effect.

The core of the patented TAS test platform is the interaction between the TAS analyzer, a portable lightweight computer that conducts, analyzes and stores test results and its proprietary dry chemistry test cards. Each disposable test card contains a unique reagent for measuring a particular test parameter. During testing, the reagent on the card is activated by a single drop of blood. The blood initiates the test sequence automatically, and results are generally available under five minutes. The true value of TAS is its ability to provide rapid testing for the management of numerous disease states - all on a single analyzer.

PharmaNetics' growth strategy is to continue working in collaboration with major drug companies to develop specialty diagnostics which will enable innovative therapeutics affecting coagulation to be administered more effectively. Currently, diagnostic tests are in clinical trials to monitor developmental drugs from Knoll AG-BASF Pharma which treat stroke, sepsis, unstable angina and deep vein thrombosis - as well as other applications.

Providing the ability to accurately and rapidly monitor various therapies across numerous disease states aptly describes PharmaNetics' role in developing new drugs. While PharmaNetics does not develop the therapy, nor the reagents to monitor therapy, it does supply the technology necessary to measure coagulation rapidly - not to mention the expertise to adapt the technology to specific drugs. PharmaNetics' future success is closely linked to that of its pharmaceutical partners in emerging therapeutics.

A New Age of Health Care

At PharmaNetics, we’re proud to say we’re making a valuable - and growing - contribution to improving new therapies. By providing rapid, innovative and cost effective monitoring of new therapeutics, PharmaNetics is helping to take healthcare into a new age.
