UNITE
2007 Fast Track to IT Agility - Coming in September
Attendees
to the annual UNITE conference will obtain the latest
information on trends and technology and have an opportunity
to network with friends and colleagues, but there
is more to it than that. It is also a great place
to get problems resolved, according to Marian Ritland,
chairwoman of the board of UNITE. “One thing
people lose sight of is that we have been pretty successful
in the past in acting as an ombudsman when customers
of Unisys have trouble working through the bureaucracy
or getting the answers they need,” she noted.
“We can help them find the right executive or
right person to get their questions answered. That
is one of the big benefits of the conference.”
The
site of the upcoming UNITE 2007 Fast Track to IT Agility
conference, scheduled for September 9-13 at the Valley
Forge Convention Plaza in King of Prussia, PA, is
close to Unisys' Blue Bell headquarters as well as
its development center in Tredyffrin “and that
helps us draw in both engineers and executives to
the conference,” observed Ritland, who is also
development and operations manager at University of
Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
A
big draw for this particular conference, said Ritland,
is that Joe McGrath, who has spoken at UNITE in the
past, will be addressing the conference for the first
time as president and CEO of Unisys. And, noted Ritland,
while the cost of attending the conference goes up
and down depending on the venue, this location should
be particularly economical for attendees.
Among
the vendors exhibiting at the conference are Applied
Information Sciences, KMSYS Worldwide, Attachmate,
Locum Software Services, B&L Associates, MGS,
CIBER, Quickware, Core Technology Corp., SightLine
Systems,Dynamic Solutions International (DSI), SMA,
EMC Corp., SUMMIT Education, Formula Consultants,Sun
Microsystems, G Force Global Technologies, TeamQuest
Corp., GoldEye Software, Unisys Corp., Integrity Services
and UPP Business Systems.
To
help attendees better plan their time at the conference,
there is a personal schedule system available on the
UNITE Web site, allowing attendees to pick the sessions
they want to attend and print out a schedule. For

Unisphere Research to Present Original Data at UNITE
Tom
Wilson, president and CEO of Unisphere Research, the
research arm of the Unisys 5 Minute Briefing newsletter,
will present findings from the company’s proprietary
study called The Continuing Strategic Role of
Mainframe Data: Issues and Challenges, at UNITE
on Monday, September 10, at 8 a.m. The study, which
was sponsored by Attachmate, surveyed nearly 10 percent
of the Unisys mainframe installed base about their
strategic plans for Unisys implementations. At the
session, you will get important insight into what
your colleagues are planning. To access the executive
summary of the survey, go here.

Unisys is First with New TPC-E Benchmark
Unisys
Corp. has announced the first benchmark result delivered
by any computer systems vendor for the Transaction
Processing Performance Council’s (TPC) new TPC-E
benchmark test. The test was run on Unisys' ES7000/one
Enterprise Server and Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Enterprise Edition. The TPC-E benchmark, the
successor to the 15-year-old TPC-C benchmark, was
introduced on March 19, 2007.
“Let's
be honest, a lot of things have happened in 15 years,”
Mark Feverston, vice president of Microsoft Solutions,
Unisys Systems and Technology, observed to 5 Minute
Briefing. “We needed something that did represent
a little bit more modern application architecture,
a little bit more modern database schema, something
that more closely replicated the infrastructure usage
of a server in the data center.” The new test,
he stated, is a more accurate representation of an
actual data center and an application that “is
going to be more closely aligned to real-life results
that clients get.”
Using
the TPC-E benchmark, Unisys was able to run a series
of tests on its ES7000/one Enterprise Server platform
in the Microsoft Windows and SQL Server environment.
TPC-E reports two primary metrics for devices under
test, covering both performance and economic viability.
Performance is measured as “transactions per
second for the E benchmark” (tpsE) while economic
efficiency is shown as dollars per tpsE ($/tpsE) calculated
as three-year cost of ownership divided by tpsE. The
ES7000/one Enterprise Server turned in impressive
results, according to Unisys, with performance reaching
660.85 tpsE and an attractive economic analysis at
$1777.18/tpsE. The ES7000/one is available now
and all tested components will be available by September
28, 2007.
The
ES7000/one Enterprise Server series, priced from $45,000,
stated the vendor, represents Unisys' high-end vision
for standards-based enterprise transaction computing
in a fully open systems environment. This platform
was the first server configurable with either the
dual-core Intel Itanium 2 or the dual-core Intel Xeon
processors. The system supports up to 32 sockets of
either class and is backed by a variety of storage
and networking connectivity options.
The new test comprises an online transaction processing
(OLTP) performance analysis designed to stress a variety
of hardware and software platforms that reflect a
modern IT environment. Instead of running as
a purely academic benchmark, TPC-E models the traffic
and transaction patterns of a brokerage firm. The
test models a variety of back-end processing data
and front-end customers who generate transactions
typical of a brokerage house - account inquiries,
online trades and market research. The brokerage firm
also interacts with outside financial markets to execute
orders and update relevant account and market information.

Performance Council, go here.

U.S. Army's PM J-AIT Implements MicroStrategy
Software for Logistics Reporting and Analysis
MicroStrategy,
a leading provider of business intelligence software,
has announced that the U.S. Army's Product Manager,
Joint - Automatic Identification Technology (PM J-AIT)
has implemented the MicroStrategy Business Intelligence
Platform to report on and analyze logistics data for
a radio frequency identification (RFID) solution implemented
by Unisys Corp.
The
Radio Frequency In-Transit Visibility (RF-ITV) program
provides government and contractor personnel across
four continents with instant access to critical information
on military cargo, equipment, and supplies. MicroStrategy
software was selected to improve the ability to access
and analyze data, and provide better decisions to
enhance the Department of Defense's worldwide logistics
tracking system. Timely access to mission-critical
information will enable decision makers throughout
the logistics pipeline to plan, prioritize, and redirect
logistics operations to improve warfighter readiness.
“We
are impressed with MicroStrategy’s technology,
especially its integrated platform, intuitive report
development, and interactive, full-featured Web interface,”
said Jim Hayes, program manager RF-ITV, of Unisys.
“Unlike claims we heard from other BI providers,
MicroStrategy has a true zero-footprint interface,
with no plug-ins required, which provides a self-service
reporting environment for the RF-ITV Program’s
diverse user population.” For more information
on MicroStrategy, go here.
