Attachmate Announces Reflection for the Web 2008
Attachmate has announced general availability of Reflection for the Web 2008, the company’s flagship browser-based host access offering. Reflection for the Web 2008 is terminal emulation software that securely connects browser users to applications on Unisys, as well as IBM, HP, UNIX, OpenVMS, and Airlines hosts. Reflection for the Web 2008 provides strong authentication and encryption capabilities to safely deliver fully functioning host applications across the public Internet.
“The main
feature set that was added for Reflection for the Web 2008 is the
addition of our Unisys and Airlines emulation into the product,”
Damon Dreke, product marketing manager, Attachmate, told 5 Minute
Briefing. This addition is part of the company's consolidation strategy
following the merger of Attachmate and WRQ a few years ago. At the
time, both companies brought thin client terminal emulation products,
said Dreke, noting that Attachmate had the e-Vantage line of products
and WRQ had the Reflection for the Web brand of products. “This
release is significant because it is the bringing together of those
two product lines.”
In addition to the Airline Link Control (ALC) emulation, which is the airlines emulation, and UTS and T27 emulation, which are the Unisys terminal emulation types, the new release also introduces a new secure token authorization feature which adds a layer of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) access control in front of host applications, integrating them into modern security infrastructures.

UNITE Launches New Web Site; Offers July 17 Webinar
Fulfilling its goal of revamping its Web site to offer a more modern look and feel as well as to be more useful to its members, UNITE launched its new site on June 30. The site was designed by Alliz Dog Productions in Marietta, GA, with input from George Gray, UNITE secretary/treasurer and director of marketing, Marian Ritland, UNITE vice chairwoman of the board and assistant DDR, and Mary Lou Regan, UNITE chief operating officer. The three formed a committee to act as a liaison between the board and the vendor.
With many new capabilities, the new site is now “easy to navigate with tabbing, and full search capabilities,” said George E. McGowan Jr., chairman of the UNITE board. A key capability is targeted at allowing members to utilize a forum that is specific to their needs, he added. “Let's face it anything you want to know - all you have to do is post a question on the Internet and you will either get an answer or you will get to a forum where you can find an answer. And that 's what we are trying to bring to our delegates.”
Additionally,
although membership is limited to individuals who have paid a fee
or attended the previous conference, with the new site just launched,
UNITE has opened up temporary membership to anyone who wants to
sign up. This grace period is expected to last until about 30 days
before the upcoming conference, allowing potential new participants
to learn about the benefits of membership, including new weekly
emails about UNITE news and the conference as well as access to
new UNITE-sponsored Webinars from now until the conference. These
initiatives are part of an effort to bring value to members throughout
the year and not just centered around the conference, McGowan said.
The 2008 UNITE Annual Technology Conference, “Adapting to a Changing World,” will be held Sunday, October 19, through Wednesday, October 22, at the Caribe Royale Orlando in Orlando, FL.
The upcoming
UNITE conference will feature a keynote address on Monday, October
20, by Rich Marcello, senior vice president, Systems & Technology,
Unisys. He will address “Adapting to a Changing World.”
Additionally, on Tuesday, October 21, Brian Ott, vice president
and chief technology officer in Systems and Technology, Unisys,
will talk about SOA/SOI and 3D Blueprinting.
“We are tickled to death about the quality of the sessions,” said McGowan. “We have hands-on labs in every single session slot starting Sunday afternoon with a three-hour lab for the EAE folks followed by a joint lab for MCP and 2200 – and the labs will continue through the last session on Wednesday.”
Additionally, as part of continuing effort by UNITE and the Unisys eCommunity to make some of the award-winning presentations from the 2007 UNITE Conference available, a Webinar titled “Experiences with Integrating Off-the-Shelf Search Engines to Complement Your ClearPath System,” will be replayed July 17, from 1 to 2 pm EDT. TeamQuest Enhances Support for Latest Unisys MCP Release
TeamQuest Corp., a leader in IT service optimization software, has announced the release of its latest Site Management Facility II (SMFII) software for Unisys MCP systems. The new release supports Unisys MCP 12.0 and adds improved administration security, support for IPv6 and enhanced system SUMLOG file processing.
“The importance of this release is that it is allowing customers to take advantage of the latest technology that is emerging - including the latest release of the operating system - without losing any of their performance data,” Marsha Griffin, TeamQuest software engineer manager, told 5 Minute Briefing. “We are right there with them, giving them the performance information that they need to keep their systems running as smoothly as possible.”
A key addition to the new release, said Griffin, is IPv6 support that “allows you to monitor and report on the new Internet Protocol v6 traffic on your MCP system.” IPv6 is a replacement for IPv4, the current Internet Protocol used for communicating data across a packet-switched internetwork. “My understanding is that the current IPv4 is going to be extinct in the next two to four years,” Griffin said.
The new release also offers security measures to enable users to restrict access to SMFII administration based on usercode security levels, “allowing customers to restrict who can create their workloads and alarms through our administration interface,” Griffin said. “This allows the system administrator to lock down access to create those workloads and alarms.”
Additionally, the SMFII software has been enhanced to allow the TeamQuest IT Service Analyzer and Reporter user interface to look at MCP data, said Griffin. TeamQuest View, which was previously used to look at collected performance data, is still supported “but now we have an additional option where you can take data from multiple MCP systems and put that performance data into a single database so that you can do reports and get an enterprise-wide view of your performance. It is not server-centric anymore,” said Griffin. Reports can be automatically generated at pre-designated intervals and these reports can be accessed with a URL by whomever requires the report, added Griffin.
And finally,
a new Logconsolidator option enables the system to continue processing
system SUMLOG s without user intervention if TeamQuest SMFII Logconsolidator
noticed a gap in the sequence of processed SUMLOGs. This could occur
if SUMLOG s were removed or deliberately not processed, or when
a fresh SMFII database was created. Previously, Logconsolidator
issued an alert and waited for user input before continuing if it
found a gap in the sequence of SUMLOGs. The new option will enable
customers who want to automate this process to essentially bypass
the error message so they can continue processing their SUMLOGs
without any delay.
