Unisys Chooses Scalent Systems Software for Solutions to
Enhance Real-Time Data Center Management
Unisys Corp. has announced that it has signed an agreement
with Scalent Systems to use Scalent Virtual Operating
Environment (V/OE) software as a key ingredient in
real-time infrastructure solutions for enterprise
data centers. The new agreement is intended to enable
Unisys to address enterprise clients’ requirements
for new options to manage complexity as virtualization
in their IT infrastructure spreads from servers to
networks, storage systems and beyond.
The Scalent V/OE software enables data centers to
react in real-time to changing business needs by dynamically
changing which servers are running and how those servers
are connected to networks and storage systems. This
dynamic resource allocation is guided by predefined
rules specific to the business and happens without
physical intervention.
“We are in the field that is currently being
referred to by most analysts as infrastructure virtualization.
As a company, the area we target is the virtualization
of the data center as a whole,” Ben Linder,
Scalent CEO, told 5 Minute Briefing. “Scalent's
system is based on the notion that in order to truly
achieve a virtual data center, you have to virtualize
not only your servers but also the network connectivity
and the storage connectivity in order to achieve the
level of agility and reliability and utilization that
virtualization promises.”
The Scalent software expands the capabilities of Unisys
real-time infrastructure solutions. It will enable
Unisys to create solutions that complement virtualized
server environments and associated transformation
services, encompassing solutions and services for
the entire enterprise IT infrastructure.
“Scalent is complementary to things like VMware
or Xen but what it really allows you to do is create
a fully malleable environment in the data center where
any server can be put to any use at any time within
a matter of minutes and the associated network and
storage is also brought under the same level of management
and virtualization,” said Linder. “That
feeds into what Unisys is trying to achieve with what
they call real-time infrastructure. It is another
way of saying data center virtualization.”

TeamQuest Announces “Microsite”
to Provide Data Center Issues Education
TeamQuest
Corp., a global leader in IT service optimization
(ITSO) software, has launched a new microsite to present
solutions to IT's most pressing business issues via
a new microsite. The microsite seeks to provide entertainment
value while at the same time educating viewers on
serious IT challenges
“We are using it as a marketing vehicle to get
the word out about our products and solutions,”
TeamQuest director of corporate marketing Craig Olson,
told 5 Minute Briefing. The microsite is intended
to provide entertainment value while at the same time
educating viewers on serious IT challenges. “It
basically focuses on six business needs that our software
solves,” said Olson.
Those needs include: helping organizations support
ITIL objectives, helping align IT with business unit
goals, helping ensure availability, making the best
use of limited resources, helping them implement a
consolidation strategy and helping them bring new
services on line. The microsite provides insights,
real-world scenarios and valuable information.
The microsite currently highlights a Fortune 500 insurance
company that used TeamQuest software to analyze its
current usage, increase utilization of existing resources,
and gain greater control over its budget. The end
result for the company was that all new services were
deployed without the need to purchase any new servers
in a two-year period, providing savings of $12 million
in the 18 months, according to Olson.
Understanding and accurately predicting environment
behavior provides companies an advantage over the
competition, according to TeamQuest, which contends
that capacity planning is the key to providing optimized
IT services. Server consolidation is a major cost
containment strategy in the data center followed by
meeting agreed upon service levels.

Unisys and Incipient Enter Relationship
for Storage Virtualization and Data Migration Software
Unisys Corp. has announced that it has signed a relationship
agreement with storage virtualization and data migration
software company Incipient, making Unisys the first
systems integrator in Europe to directly supply and
support software products developed by Incipient.
The Incipient product suite helps organizations to
efficiently manage data across storage area network
(SAN) infrastructures without disruption to business
operations.
Under the agreement with Incipient, Unisys will be
entitled to offer to customers a proven solution for
managing large-scale SAN environments. Feature sets
such as non-disruptive data migration and automated
storage provisioning are intended to offer customers
the ability to dynamically respond to rapid storage
growth and to reduce planned downtime, as well as
allow customers to benefit from reductions in capital
and operational expenditures, according to the vendors.
"Unisys is well regarded in the industry as a
leading provider of trusted storage services. This
relationship will offer us many opportunities as we
continue to expand our business throughout EMEA,"
said Robert Infantino, senior vice president of marketing
and alliances, Incipient. "Companies with large
enterprise SANs continue to grow their information
at a blistering pace. Until now, companies have not
had access to a solution that offers the flexibility
to manage that kind of business growth. By teaming
with Incipient, Unisys can now provide a solution
to this age-old problem. For the first time, companies
will be able to leverage a broader range of storage
vendors, be able to dynamically move storage resources
at will without the need for extended planning, and
drive down the overall cost of SAN ownership."
